Press Release                                                    14/09, Athens, 2016

True to its annual tradition, the 5th Athens Flying Week, the leading aviation event, is fast approaching.
The largest international air show in South-Eastern Europe, the Athens Flying Week International Air Show, has GROWN and is ready to take off from the 114 Combat Wing at TANAGRA, promising to be more dynamic than ever!
The air show has a loyal fan base of more than 200,000 people worldwide. This year’s event will be held at the Tanagra Air Base, on the weekend of 17-18 September 2016.
This aerodrome offers practically unlimited space for spectators who, for the first time, will be able to get up close to their favourite jets as they take off and land. They will be able to admire all the aircraft in the largest static display in recent years; be photographed next to them together with their pilots; and enjoy unique moments and experiences with world renowned aerobatic champions and jet fighter display pilots, in stunning unique choreographies in the air!
This year, for the first time ever in Greece, AFW will showcase stunning WINGWALKER DANIELLE HUGHES, who will literally dance on the wings of a Boeing Stearman while in flight (http://athensflyingweek.gr/index.php/el/newsgr/currentnewsgr/221-wingwalker-daniellegr), and the amazing JETMAN DUBAI (http://www.jetman.com).
The programme also features the Aerobatic Team Patrulla Águila of the Spanish Air Force, the British Royal Air Force Chinook and the Belgian Air Force F-16 Solo Display Team. The Polish Air Force will be participating with its new F-16 Polish Demo Team, the Iskry Team, while Serbia will be represented by the Soko Galeb G2, Soko Kraguj and Utva 66 squadrons. The Blu Circe team, the Silver Chicken (http://www.silver-chicken.it/index.shtml) and international champion Luca Bertossio will represent Italy. The programme also features BLUE AIR with a Boeing 737 from Romania; Johan Gustafsson who will paint the sky with majestic hues at sunset (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3NyptGJzLο), from Sweden; Andi and Tim Schaerer – Red Bull with their remote-controlled planes from Switzerland; and the HELLENIC SKYDIVERS along with Greek helicopter pilot WIZARD Dimitris Ververelis.
Naturally, this major aviation event could not but include the Hellenic Armed Forces. The Hellenic Air Force promises to impress spectators with the Zeus F-16 Demo team, DAEDALUS demo team (T-6), SUPER PUMA, Mirage 2000-5, F-4E AUP Phantom II and other jet fighters. The Hellenic Navy will participate with its Sea Hawks and the Hellenic Army Aviation will fly its Apache attack helicopters.

In this year’s event, for the first time ever, the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) shall host an open day exclusively for the friends of the Athens Flying Week and will allow us to enter and take a guided tour into a world so far unknown to us. At the same time, it will host its own aviation equipment exhibition to complement the AFW static display at the airport. The exhibition will include the Sukhoi- 22UM3K and vintage aircraft of great value, such as the FI-156 STORC and BUCKER 131 of the Athenian Aviators Collection.
The air show programme will also showcase foreign and Greek model aircraft makers, including Giorgos Papagiannis. For our visitors we have set up a multi-sectoral trade fair, a variety of restaurants, original happenings and, as always, a play area for the little ones, larger than any other time before.
In addition, information will be available on site about all types of aviation training by aero clubs, the Hellenic Aeronautical and Air Sports Federation (ELAO) and other pilot training facilities.
The AFW 2016 events kick off on Tuesday 12 September with the Aviation Development Conference #5, hosted at Hotel Grande Bretagne from 09:30 to 15:00. This will be attended by leading names from Greece and abroad, emphasising its international importance. With a rich and diverse agenda, the conference aims to stimulate the interest not just of all those party to the secrets of flying, but also the general public. Entry is free.
